We are verifying video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that purport to show the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the location of where the pictures originated relied on social media reports saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
