Torrential Downpours Aggravate Conditions for Uprooted Palestinians in Gaza, Officials Warn
Persistent rains over the recent period have compounded the already dire living conditions of the many hundreds of thousands of uprooted residents in the region, as stated by relief organizations.
"Awful" Weather Poses Severe Dangers
A representative detailed the weather overnight as "horrendous", with downpours so heavy that up to 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the streets.
"Last night was exceptionally difficult for the residents. The storms were so strong... And the gusts were so powerful," said the representative.
Authorities voice significant anxiety that children sheltering in makeshift shelters in soaked garments will contract hypothermia and various sicknesses.
Deaths and Widespread Loss
Health authorities have reported that one baby has succumbed from the cold and at least 11 other people have lost their lives in building collapses caused by the storms.
Other reports put a higher fatality count. Officials said that multiple residential buildings had totally fallen and dozens had sustained partial collapse.
- Almost 55,000 families harmed by rains.
- More than 40 designated safe spaces severely flooded.
- Many people compelled to find new shelter.
Aid Distribution Considered Not Enough
Groups have escalated distribution of tarpaulins, warm covers and clothing after the ceasefire started, but they stress there is continues to be not enough aid reaching those in need.
"Officials are operating tirelessly to bring in that assistance and to distribute it, but the scale of the necessities is so vast that we still have many thousands of individuals and minors who are really enduring hardship nightly," stated one official.
Ongoing Challenges and Truce Plans
The second phase of the ceasefire encompasses arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the pullback of troops, and other conditions.
Relief bodies have underscored the necessity for "increased and sustained aid to respond to urgent and ongoing needs."
The conflict was sparked by an offensive in the autumn of 2023. Subsequent campaigns have caused a significant number of lives lost in the region, based on health ministry figures.
