This Swine Life: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Leader.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as sparing festive fowl, but the county's top official experienced a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a long and happy life away from worry.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six-seven” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The trend became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently declared “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to open the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: joyful, diverse, and based in heritage that unite the community. Annually, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and strong coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
