The Reason PSG Are Focusing On Parisian Talent to Retain Their Continental Crown

Academy players were formerly a fairly infrequent sight on Paris St-Germain matchday squads.

Until a few years ago, the team's QSI era was characterized by marquee acquisitions from abroad.

The Shift in Strategy

Some of PSG's most notable academy products during that era, including Kingsley Coman and Mike Maignan, found themselves moving on before making their mark in the French capital.

The team's turn towards French talent in current campaigns has already seen the emergence of Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue spearhead last year's successful campaign.

Building From Within

Currently, PSG are looking to build further and develop around their local prospects, a shift that has been catalyzed by an early-season injury crisis.

Due to Dembele, Doue and Achraf Hakimi among the long-term absentees, there have been as many as five youth products - all from the French capital - in the team sheet this season.

Modern Training Facilities

The team's all-encompassing youth development center has been key to that strategy.

Two years ago, PSG relocated from the previous facilities to the recently constructed cutting-edge PSG Campus.

The modern infrastructure, which were publicly launched a last year, house the professional teams along with their development squads over a large area.

These include multiple training fields, accommodation for 140 young players, schooling infrastructure and even a produce area.

Future Direction

Speaking at an event to commemorate the half-century milestone of the development program's inception, technical director Luis Campos explained that the club's long-term plans were to incorporate "more and more players from the Paris area" in the main roster.

"The philosophy is to have prospects in all youth categories who can climb the steps the academy," states Campos.

A clearer path from the development program to the senior squad can also lessen the organization's need on the external signings, the Portuguese executive emphasized.

For Campos, "going to the supermarket regularly doesn't make you a superior chef."

"What's important is to be moving in the right direction, not to accumulate talents," he elaborates.

Youth Development

The ex-Ligue 1 executive also described a gathering between Luis Enrique and the development team, in which the Spaniard established his "tactical approach" rather than imposing particular drills or playing systems to follow.

The Spanish coach's appointment in recent years, Campos notes, was particularly supported by "willingness to play academy products as soon as they're ready."

Young Prospects

Versus Barcelona in October, it was Senny Mayulu, who spearheaded the attack and found the net in PSG's unlikely 2-1 victory.

Warren Zaire-Emery, Quentin Ndjantou and Ibrahim Mbaye were also participated in the win over the Catalans, while 17-year-old Mathis Jangeal was in the squad, having first appeared for the first team a short time earlier.

Mayulu, who scored the concluding goal in the European showpiece victory over Inter in May, has been among the initial triumphs of the new direction.

Adaptable Talent

The young midfielder, primarily a midfield player, particularly attributes his significant playing time to his versatility.

Having started in every league game since the early season, Mayulu has been utilized throughout the team, from full-back position, to engine room, to centre-forward.

Academy Leadership

Yohan Cabaye has been the overseer of the youth system since 2024, having originally joined the development system soon after the conclusion of his professional career.

The ex-international player speaks particularly highly of Mayulu, pointing to the way he recovered from injury various instances in his youth career.

"During his early days in the youth system, he was finding it difficult to finish entire campaigns," Cabaye states. "He demonstrated such resilience that he repeatedly recovered, though."

Special Prospect

Zaire-Emery, as the former Newcastle man puts it, is an exception.

"We can't use him as an benchmark, otherwise you'd have multiple young players seeking out Luis Enrique's door," he comments.

Currently in his fourth year in the main roster, the young talent has been leading the affected Parisians from an growing accustomed defensive position.

Return to Form

Subsequent to challenges through stretches of last season, the national team player is regaining the impressive displays that initially secured his place in the first team.

After also coming back to the national team in the past few weeks, the local product explained his stint with the development squad helped him rediscover his self-belief.

"I concentrated on my development, I've kept going and worked hard," he explained before the fixture versus Bayer Leverkusen.

PSG have gained advantages, with Zaire-Emery functioning as the leading example another time for the emerging local talents of Parisians.

Rival Interest

A crucial aspect of making the most of the capital city prospects is combating interest from other clubs.

Utilizing dedicated recruitment staff covering development leagues in the capital and its surroundings, PSG are aiming to enhance their foothold on the rich source of prospects at their local area, from which their Ligue 1 and Champions League opponents have historically signed players.

Academy Achievements

If youth championship results are a reliable guide, PSG will not be short of players to integrate in the years to come.

The youth team retained their league title this recent campaign and have performed well in the international tournaments, which has naturally drawn external interest.

"There are frequently between 30 and 40 scouts from French and foreign teams attending our development fixtures," Cabaye notes.</
