The Latest Casual Game Mode Ignites Intense Debates Regarding AI Players, Experience Points, and Wait Times
Recently, Battlefield Studios launched a new game mode titled Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this option mirrors the standard Breakthrough setup but includes several key changes:
- Each team has just eight real players, with the rest made up of 32 bots.
- Actions performed by human gamers grant complete experience points, while AI activities provide lower rewards.
- Just a pair of maps can be played: Siege of Cairo and Empire State.
- Elements like Dogtags, accolades, and career stat updates are disabled.
In short, this mode lives up to its title: it offers a casual version of Breakthrough. At face value, you might think there's nothing wrong, since it gives additional choices for players seeking alternative methods to have fun with the title. But, if video games has shown one thing, it is that not everyone will be happy. In other words, many Battlefield 6 players are upset.
Player Reactions: Anger to Praise
"Gamers prefer human opponents. Avoid making the errors of your rivals," states a response to the official announcement. "Truly disappointing idea," comments another. At the same time, in community forums, one user notes, "I have no idea where we are going with this title," while someone else lists everything they believe to be broken in the game: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We don't need this bot mode."
However, for every complaint, some gamers explaining how much they're enjoying the new mode. "It's very fun to warm up, real players prevent it from being a total farmfest but it's very relaxed," says one Reddit comment. "This subreddit doesn't understand that there are gamers who actually go outside and can't play this title all the time. Allow them to strike a balance," adds a different comment. One reply via social media explains that as they're "a battledad with limited time, this is great for me," and another applauds the mode for "avoiding intense competition."
Valid Criticisms and Community Feedback
All that said, there are constructive reasons to criticize the new mode. A few folks have pointed out that it could increase queue times even longer for other modes due to the sheer number of options currently available. On a similar note, certain regions often face mostly bots in the existing playlists. Additionally, it appears somewhat counterintuitive that the mode won't start without a required amount of real players, even though it focuses mostly on combat against bots.
Finally, a major complaints is that Battlefield Portal was promised to provide complete rewards, even against bots, but that got canned when they attempted to eliminate XP farming from the mode. So this new playlist feels like the player base compromising in the middle, according to a Reddit comment. A different user describes this addition as the developers "making a mistake significantly, I had great enjoyment in the initial release, why did they feel the need to change it?"
Looking Ahead: Adjustments Be Made?
Should Battlefield Studios has proven anything to date with the latest installment, it's that they're listening and acting on player input. Assignments being too difficult were adjusted rapidly, as did the specific battle pass objectives. Chances are that, if their data indicates this new playlist is underperforming to their expectations, they will not hesitate to change it again.
