The ice cream brand's Co-Founder States Parent Company Blocked Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
One of the original creators of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has announced how parent company Unilever blocked the introduction for an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, who established the business alongside his partner, disclosed how he plans to independently develop the controversial flavor as part of an individual series highlighting issues the company has been barred from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Founders and Parent Company
The recent development intensifies the ongoing conflict between the world-famous ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the British consumer goods giant which has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted how the parent company along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Sorbet as an Emblem of Support
Mr. Cohen announced via an Instagram video that he is creating an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions for naming options plus additional components.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen commented from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, which mirror the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement and Current Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in territories occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever selling the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales within disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series is being created through Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand that originally established several years back to support ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts and Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen indicated how he will create other frozen dessert varieties that address concerns which the company was prevented from speaking about openly by Unilever.
This development follows partner Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, after decades of involvement, mentioning worries regarding how the company's autonomy had been undermined after corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen remarked how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to keep working inside the company to advocate for its independence ensuring that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the values that established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
