Chicago White Sox Land Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on an Lucrative $34 Million Contract.

In a notable move for their retooling roster, the American League club have welcomed infielder Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a $34 million contract for the accomplished player.

Financial Terms and Added Benefits

The contract includes a substantial signing bonus, payable within 30 days, alongside annual pay of sixteen million for the upcoming season and seventeen million for the following year.

Additionally, Murakami's final-year pay can increase based on award achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for earning the league MVP award.
  • $500K for finishing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
  • $250,000 for ranking in the top ten.
  • Another $250,000 for winning the Rookie of the Year honor.

His deal provides that he will not be optioned to the farm system without his approval and grants him a free agent at the conclusion of the term. Further benefits include a club-supplied interpreter and airfare between his home country and the States.

Posting Fee and Franchise History

As part of the acquisition, Chicago owes a compensation payment of over $6.5 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's NPB. The Japanese club are also entitled to a 15% cut of any triggered salary escalators.

Murakami is set to become the fourth-ever player from Japan to play for the South Siders, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami while both were in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 in February, bolsters a emerging group of offensive players in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a difficult season, finishing at the bottom in the division but representing a notable improvement from the previous campaign.

The winner of back-to-back Most Valuable Player honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is famous for a historic 2022 season where he launched 56 home runs, eclipsing the single-season record for a NPB hitter previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's elusive Triple Crown.

His last year was shortened to just 56 appearances due to an oblique injury. Even with fanning often, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 runs batted in.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has accumulated a .270 batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBI, and 977 strikeouts in 892 contests. Early in his career playing mostly at first base, he has spent most of his time to third base.

International Pedigree

Murakami's heroics were on global view during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he delivered a victory-sealing double that scored two fellow Japanese stars for a thrilling 6-5 victory. The very next day in the title match against the USA, he blasted a game-tying home run in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's eventual 3-2 victory.

The lefty slugger is set to be unveiled at a press conference on the coming Monday.
